Authorities in Rockwall, Texas, located about 20 miles from Dallas, are looking for a man they said impersonated a county constable as part of a foreclosure scam, according to a report by WFAA
in Dallas.
Rockwall resident Carolyn Williams told WFAA a man who said he was “the constable” came to the door of the home she’s been renting for three months and told her it was being foreclosed on and she would have to move out.
But the Rockwall County constable for the area, John Cullins, said he had never been to the home.
Cullins told WFAA, “I have no eviction and I am the only one in this precinct who would have served it,” he said.
According to the report, the house went into foreclosure because the owner failed to pay his home owners association dues, but the HOA’s attorney said the association has not filed an eviction notice.
Cullins believes the suspect was trying to pull off a foreclosure scam.
Cullins said, “I think somebody saw the paperwork and thought I will scare them off, change the locks, and the rent the house to somebody.”
By law, when a constable serves an eviction notice, they must provide eviction papers, notices and identification, and Cullins said homeowners should ask to see the documents.
Authorities are still looking for the suspect.
