Wells Fargo Teams with National Urban League to Aid Homeowners

Wells Fargo and the National Urban League have released the second edition of “The Foreclosure Workbook: The Complete Guide to Understanding Foreclosure and Saving Your Home.”

The resource offers information to aid homeowners behind on their mortgage payments. The free workbook is distributed by the National Urban League through its affiliates that manage homeownership and foreclosure prevention programs. The Urban League will distribute about 7,500 copies of this latest edition to distressed homeowners across the country.

“Our vision has long been to help our customers across the credit spectrum to succeed financially by helping them achieve and sustain homeownership,” said Cara Heiden, outgoing co-president of Wells Fargo Home Mortgage, which is based out of Des Moines, Iowa.

“We believe in doing what’s right for our customers and that includes working with them to find options that will help keep them in their homes when they face financial difficulties,” Heiden added.

Homeownership has likewise been a long-standing component of the National Urban League’s economic empowerment mission. Foreclosure prevention is one of the signature programs of the Urban League’s Housing and Community Development division.

Through the work of its affiliates, the National Urban League assists more than 50,000 people a year with homeownership issues by providing important housing counseling and financial literacy services. This effort is designed to improve the financial situation for minorities with respect to securing homeownership, maintaining good credit and saving money.

“Many homeowners facing foreclosure have a lot of anxiety and fear,” commented Marc H. Morial, president and CEO of the National Urban League. “The workbook, with all of the helpful information and guidance, can help alleviate some of those feelings and move people toward a possible resolution.”

“The Foreclosure Workbook” provides information that helps homeowners understand the foreclosure process and what options may be available to help them prevent a foreclosure sale. Actual worksheets help consumers assess their financial situation and record information received when meeting with mortgage servicers. In addition, resources such as contact information for local housing counseling agencies and a warning about mortgage scams are included in the workbook.

“The quality of this book resides in its comprehensiveness,” said Cy Richardson, VP of housing and community development for the National Urban League. “It really is a step-by-step complete guide to educate and assist homeowners who may be facing foreclosure.”

The workbook was first published in 2009, in conjunction with Leading the Way Home, Wells Fargo’s multi-faceted initiative to stabilize housing, advance homeownership, and revitalize neighborhoods in cities hit hard by foreclosure.

Through several programs under the initiative, including home preservation workshops and local mortgage help centers, Wells Fargo has met with more than 57,000 of its customers face-to-face to work on their mortgage payment concerns.
