Nearly one in six prospective homebuyers across different races and ethnicities reported facing some form of discrimination during the homebuying process, according to the National Association of Realtors. Thanks to one of REO’s biggest professional groups, the mortgage industry has taken a significant step in diversity and inclusion. The Federation of REO Certified Experts announced the launch of its Diversity Council on Wednesday, a group that aims to “advance conversations on diversity and inclusion.” The group is made up of six committees, including ones for Latino, African American, women, LGBT, veteran, and Asian REO professionals.

Despite rising steadily in numbers over the last decade, the Asian American and Pacific Islander population is showing homeownership rates well below the national average. Rates are also below that of other demos, particularly of non-Hispanic whites. Experts say this data reveals untapped potential.
