Loan Modifications Surpass One Million Mark for 2010

The industry has completed 1.13 million permanent loan modifications for at-risk homeowners so far in 2010, according to data released Wednesday by HOPE NOW. The organization also reports that since January of this year, mortgage delinquencies of 60 days or more past due have dropped 20 percent, but the data supports the assumption that the decline is simply the byproduct of an increase in foreclosures. July's foreclosure starts outpaced loan mods during the month by nearly 90 percent.

As Servicers Shift Focus from HAMP, Completed Mods Near 1M Mark

The industry has completed about 975,000 permanent loan modifications so far in 2010, according to estimates released this week by the HOPE NOW Alliance. Of those, only a third have been processed under the umbrella of the federal government's Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP). Two-thirds have been servicers' own proprietary mod programs. HOPE NOW also reports, though, that servicers have initiated more than 1.2 million foreclosures this year.

U.S. Reps Partner With HUD, Treasury to Prevent Foreclosures in Atlanta

U.S. Reps. John Lewis, David Scott, and Hank Johnson have joined forces with HUD, the U.S. Department of Treasury, the HOPE NOW Alliance, and NeighborWorks America for an upcoming event aimed at helping financially troubled homeowners in the Atlanta area. The event, dubbed the ""Help for Homeowners"" project, is scheduled for July 30 and July 31. Nearly 20 of the area's top lenders will be available at the event to meet one-on-one with area residents who are struggling to pay their mortgages.
