Business Declines for Private Mortgage Insurers

A total of 38,908 insurance certificates for borrowers seeking to buy or refinance a home were issued by members of Mortgage Insurance Companies of America (MICA) in October. That number sits lower than most other months of 2013 and is nearly 4,000 less than last October. At the same time, dollar volume on insurance written throughout the month was the lowest since May 2012.

September Sees Drop in New Private Mortgage Insurance

Member firms of Mortgage Insurance Companies of America (MICA) issued a combined 37,501 new mortgage insurance policies with a dollar volume of $9.6 billion in September. Private mortgage insurers' new business for the month represents a drop from the 46,051 new policies issued in August and tracks a drop in August application volume of more than 5,000.

Private Mortgage Insurers Report Improvements in March

Mortgage Insurance Companies of America (MICA) reported a lift in business in March, with dollar volume rising both month-over-month and year-over-year. At the same time, the number of private mortgage insurance applications received by MICA members totaled 43,278 in March, up from 36,793 in February and 32,540 in March 2012. March's application volume was the highest since last October, when MICA members reported receiving 46,045 applications.

MICA Members Write $396B in New Mortgage Insurance in May

Mortgage Insurance Companies of America (MICA) released on Friday its monthly statistical report showing that member companies reported a total of $396 billion in primary insurance in force for May. This total is down nearly $1 billion from April and is the lowest total in a year-long fall.

Private Mortgage Insurers See More Defaults Than Loan Cures

Private mortgage insurers had more new notices of default to contend with during the month of May than they had loan cures. It was the first time in four months that defaults outnumbered cures. Mortgage Insurance Companies of America (MICA) says its five members reported 44,853 defaults and 36,159 cures in May. Private mortgage insurers help loan originators and investors make mortgage funds available to homebuyers who have less than 20 percent for a down payment.

Report: Private Mortgage Insurance Enjoys Best Month in August

Based on data from six member firms, Mortgage Insurance Companies of America (MICA) reports that the companies accounted for a total of $780.3 billion in primary mortgage insurance in force in August. The private mortgage insurance industry enjoyed its best month of the year for new business. The dollar volume of primary insurance on newly originated conventional mortgages totaled $6.4 billion. MICA's members reported that 32,215 borrowers used private mortgage insurance to buy or refinance a home in August.
